Why is my Garage Door Beeping?
If you hear your garage door beeping, it might be a sign you need to take action, but don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it sounds. If anything, it’s a sign that your garage door is functioning properly because it was designed to alert homeowners to take some sort of action. In some instances, it can mean it’s time to schedule garage door repair.
These are some of the reasons your garage door opener is beeping, and what you can do to get it to stop:
It’s just closing
Some newer garage door models have a timer that closes the garage door automatically. Usually, there are flashing lights too. This is just to warn anyone close by that the garage door is about to close. Your garage door opener is working exactly as it should! It may also mean someone is using their garage door app to open/close the garage door remotely.
It’s in Wi-Fi mode
If your garage door model uses Wi-Fi connectivity to open/close on an app, rapid beeps can indicate there’s an issue with connecting to your network. If it only beeps once, it can mean that it just connected, and there are no issues.
There’s a battery issue
The first thing you should do when you notice your garage door beeping is consider the batteries. When was the last time you changed them? Garage door batteries last about a year or two, and beep when it’s time to change them before it stops working altogether.
If the light’s a solid ORANGE color, then that simply means it’s operating on backup power. This happens when there’s a power outage, and usually, you can just wait it out. If you have power at home, perhaps there’s an issue with the outlet, and you need to call an electrician.
If the light’s flashing ORANGE, then it means the battery is low. This is a good time to consider changing your battery. If the issue persists, and you notice a solid RED light, it means that it’s out of juice, and it’s time to change the battery in the opener.
For now, unplug the opener, remove the batteries, and plug it back in. This should stop the beeping. In the meantime, find out what kind of batteries you need from your garage door specialist or manufacturer’s guide and have them replaced!
There’s an alignment issue
Garage door sensors have been revolutionary for the industry, and are an important safety feature that has saved thousands from injury/death every year. They detect movement/obstruction and prevent the garage door from closing. Instead, the garage door stops and reverses. For most models, the beeping won’t stop until you press your garage door remote to disengage the alarm.
Sometimes, these sensors get misaligned, and that’s a huge safety issue. The garage door beeping says that you need to check to ensure they’re on the height and angle. If there’s still an issue, or signs of damage, schedule a garage door repair with your garage door specialist. Never attempt to fix these types of garage door issues yourself because you can get hurt!
