Tips for Troubleshooting your Garage Door Keypad
Garage door keypad problems are relatively common and frustrating. If your garage door remote controller suddenly stops working, it’s not always the result of it having been damaged. The problem could be as simple as a bad batteries contact. Therefore it’s important to troubleshoot your remote controller before replacing any parts or calling in a professional. Here we will discuss tips on how you can troubleshoot your home garage door remote controller.
1. Check if the power is turned on?
If you have a wired door device, ensure the power to your garage door opener is turned on. If your device is wireless, check to see that the battery in your transmitter is working and the device has a full charge. Test your receiver by closing the door with an extension cord or another remote clicker. If you get no response from your garage door opener, there’s a problem with the receiver or transmitter.
2. Check if the keypad working?
Once you have confirmed that the power is on and you have a fully charged transmitter, connect your probe to the 8-volt battery, polarity shouldn’t matter and place it against either wire on the metal terminal block below your garage door opener. Then press one of the buttons to see if your remote controller lights up and sends a signal to your garage door. If your remote controller does light up, try to open or close the door by pressing a button. If you notice that the garage door is not responding, it means your door remote controller is not sending a signal to your garage door opener.
3. Check the battery
If your remote controller is not working, you next need to test the connection between the remote controller and the batteries. Your batteries may not be making a good connection with the remote controller terminals. Try gently wiggling the batteries and see if the problem is resolved. If not, you will need to replace the old batteries with new ones to solve your problem. When replacing your batteries, make sure that both ends of the remote controller wires are connected to a metal terminal block.
4. Overhead Garage Door Openers
If you have an overhead garage door opener, you may need to check to ensure that the opener and receiver are working correctly. Make sure that your transmitter is connected and operating properly. Press a button on the remote to test how well the receiver functions. If you still have no response, it could mean your remote controller is not contacting your receiver, or the transmitter is damaged.
Troubleshooting your garage door remote controller can help save you some serious money. If you can fix the issue yourself, you won’t have to call for a technician to fix your automation device.
